Fight against floods – Fight for the future

European Union and Svilajnac together in the fight against floods – this is the message sent by the newly painted mural in this place, on the bridge over the Resava river. This tributary of the Velika Morava, after the great floods of 2014, which affected 50 municipalities and about one and a half million people in Serbia, is one of the rivers on whose banks rehabilitation was done. In fact, the EU invested 19 million euros in the flood rehabilitation and prevention project (RFPI), while the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) donated another half a million euros. With that money, the necessary works were carried out in Obrenovac, Surčin, Valjevo, Paraćin, Svilajnac… In total, in the last six years, the EU allocated 170 million euros in grants to our country for this purpose. The works in Svilajnyc are only part of the overall support of the European Union. Eight kilometers of coastal fortifications on Resava and its streams have been completed. The urban part of Svilajnyc is protected, as well as parts of Sedlar and Subotica, for which 3.1 million euros have been allocated. The belt that was worked on in Svilajinac is 8 kilometers long. We in the European Union don’t like walls, but this wall is good, said the head of the European Union Delegation, Ambassador Sam Fabrizi.
